The Tervueren

The Tervueren is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd, a versatile and elegant working dog, renowned for its beauty and intelligence.

Originating from Belgium, the Tervueren is named after a village near Brussels. It was developed as a herding dog in the 19th century. Today, it is valued both as a companion dog and a working dog, employed by police and rescue services worldwide.

Medium-sized, males stand about 60-66 cm at the withers, and females 56-62 cm, weighing between 20 and 30 kg. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years.

Their coat is long and dense, with a slightly harsh texture. The typical color is fawn sable (red-brown with black shading) or gray sable.

They have a slender and elegant build, with a long muzzle. Their dark almond-shaped eyes convey a lively and intelligent expression.

Highly intelligent, the Tervueren excels in complex tasks, making it an ideal working dog for activities like agility, tracking, and search work.

Deeply attached to its family, it is protective without being aggressive.

Very active, it requires plenty of exercise and mental engagement. A daily walk is not sufficient; it prefers dynamic activities.

While naturally wary of strangers, it is generally sociable if well-socialized from a young age.

The Tervueren suits active families, athletes, and those seeking an engaged and energetic companion. It is not ideal for a sedentary lifestyle or apartment living unless its physical and mental needs are met.
